The GUARDIAN’s best sites list — A Writer’s View

The GUARDIAN, out of UK, has posted at its website an article listing the 100 most useful sites on the internet. It should come as no surprise that a number of these sites are particularly relevant to writers.

For example, it list several online “applications. These are actual software programs that are accessible on the internet via your browser; they do not reside on your own computer. Some observers think this is the coming wave in the computer world. Of the five application sites listed, four of them are of direct relevance to writers.

The list also looks at Blogs, identifying WordPress and Blogger as the leading blog-creation facilities, along with Google Reader and Bloglines, which collect blogs into once location for convenient reading. These have been my own conclusions as well, after weeks of studying alternatives. [This blog is, for example, produced with WordPress.]

The GUARDIAN also singles out Gmail and Yahoo Mail as the best web-based email programs. Again, I concur.

In coming weeks, we’ll be taking a closer look at some of these tools to help our readers assess their capabilities.
