Daily Diary: A useful, customizable tool for writers
Blog reader Michael Downend passed on a reference to a free diary program — iDailyDiary by Splinterware — thinking I might find it of interest. I’ve looked at it closely, even used it now for a month. It is indeed useful, especially if one takes advantage of the tab feature.
The software follows a spiral notebook metaphor, very neat in design, offering full control over typeface and font size/attributes. In typical Diary fashion, there is a page for each day one makes entries.
One can set up within that page any number of tabs, in effect creating multiple pages only a click away. I’ve set up several tabs, which reappear day after day, to cover:
- general entries
- notes about my experiences during the process of writing
- a “button box” — read the screenshot for explanation
- steps taken during the day to promote my writing career
- and items requiring follow up
Numbers along the bottom of the screen represent all the days of the month — those highlighted with color contain entries, making it easy to scroll back through past entries. Â One can include links to the web, to other documents on your hard disk, even to other pages within the Diary. Â A search facility helps one find your own entries. Â Pictures can be easily inserted. Â And contents can be exported for use in other programs. Â Finally, one can set up more than one Diary: Â I have one I call WRITERS DIARY and another for more personal use.
This is certainly one of the best Diary programs I’ve encountered for my use as a writer.
