Zoho Writer: First partial step to go offline
Readers here will know that we’ve been following developments with online word processors, predicting that soon Zoho and Google would provide offline versions which users can download onto their computers.
Zoho has beat Google to the punch, announcing this week the first steps offline of its own Zoho Writer. [This is in addition to its operational link right into Microsoft Word, which I discussed a short time ago.] If you have documents already in the online Zoho Writer, you can now download and view them, even while off the internet. Offline editing is to follow very soon. For a video demo, go HERE.
A member of the Puerto Vallarta Writer’s Group recently asked me, why would anyone want an online word processor, especially if one takes along a laptop when travelling. As I announced here a little over a week ago, I’m now off on a major research trip to Asia — and I now have a personal tale to tell him when I return to Mexico. While I’ve had some internet access via internet cafes and a research library, I have not been able to get my laptop onto the internet [until today, that is]. And I urgently needed to download a Word document and to read it carefully. With Zoho, I was able to do that and to solve my immediate need. Moreover the document is now in Zoho online and can be downloaded into my laptop, either via my Zoho plug-in into Word or into this new Zoho offline facility.
People are beginning to discover Zoho. At last report, the company indicated it has over 300,000 online users, with its user base recently doubling within 3 months. As online-offline capabilities become fully effective, numbers can only soar.
REMEMBER: Zoho is free — and it’s very capable. As it reaches early maturity, writers should definitely take a look.
