Microsoft Office Puts Big Toe In Internet Ocean
Microsoft announced that it has created a new online service called Microsoft Office Live Workspace, which will complement its desktop program. The service goes into beta-testing this fall.
The Associated Press has just released a story about this development:
Office Live Workspace will give users about 250 megabytes of storage, or room to keep about 1,000 average Office documents “in the cloud.” PC users can upload Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and use the site to e-mail friends or colleagues and invite them to read and add comments to those documents through a Web browser.
However, if users want to edit the text, they must open the document using an installed copy of Microsoft Office.
Microsoft officials emphasize that this new offering will not be a fully-functioning online office suite, such as offered by competitors Zoho, Google and Thinkfree. Instead, it will complement its desktop suite by allowing users to share documents online for comment. Software analysts, according to the AP, predict Microsoft will move forward slowly in this new arena, as it has such a huge investment in its desktop dominance.
