After reading lately a spate of articles heaping lavish praise on Facebook, I decided to join that social network. I’ve been intrigued, and that experience is leading me out to other social networking facilities, with some of the stops opening fascinating new doors.

This has taken me to a blog which may be of particular interest to writers who seek information beyond their own bookshelf and brain: Contentious by journalist Amy Gahran, who explores “how we communicate in an online world” and who has just written an item about how writers can harness Facebook and LinkedIn to increase and improve productivity. Gahran also edits the blog E-Media Tidbits, another useful source of information for the plugged-in, out-in-the-world writer.

If you follow these links, you may be hooked for an hour or two — there’s a lot there to explore and digest.

    Myspace has become the push-advertising of the century, bombarding users with constant, unasked for, and often disgusting advertising. But, there’s a bit of sanity that can be regained when using Myspace.

    * Surf with Mozilla Firefox
    * Go to myspace.com
    * Anytime you see a pure piece of advertising, right click on it
    * In the context menu that pops up, mouse down the menu to “Block images from [insert domain here]”
    * After enough domain blocking, myspace becomes an almost peaceful place to visit.
    * CAVEAT: Be careful which domains you block. If you do happen to block something important, navigate your menus in this order:

    Tools -> Options -> Content -> Click the Exceptions button next to “Load Images Automatically” -> In the pop-up modular window, remove the domain you accidentally added. Viola, images return.

  • That’s a very interesting strategy, Jeremy. Personally, I’d just turned my back on MySpace. Your suggestion may take me back into the place.
