Best of the Web: Biz Hints, Web Apps and Blog Distribution
New Productivity Blog — Helpful Hints for Writers
Ann Wayman at The Golden Pencil has sniffed out a brand new blog which may help writers increase their productivity. My Organized Biz focusses on business and office practices, kicking off 2008 with a series of 24 Tips in January to Get Organized. The focus seems to be on individual business people, rather than institutions — and the first tips in the series are very down-to-earth suggestions that can really make a difference.
PC World lauds online applications and their offline potential
For its part, PC World reviews the 25 most innovative products of the year. It declares:
Make no mistake, the Web is taking over. Applications are moving to browsers en masse, and technology to take Web apps offline promises to smooth the road ahead.”
The magazine suggests that someday most of our work will be done online via our internet browser. It then selects Google Gears to top the list. While this program is still in beta development, it promises to allow users to move effortlessly between online and offline versions of various applications. Zoho Writer, one of the top online office suite contenders, has already tied in with Gears to allow document editing offline. This is a development worth keeping an eye on.
Zoho Notebook makes the list as well. I truly like this program for gathering information on the internet; it’s a great research companion. One can cut-and-paste virtually any king of ditigal information — words, photos, even video — into an online “notebook,” which one can then organize into pages. There are other contenders in this category of application, but PC World chooses Zoho as the best. I agree.
Amazon’s Kindle e-Book Reader, by the way, came in at number 5. Maybe it will capture reader’s imagination.

Create a Facebook Application for your Blog
Freelance Folder has uncovered a new facility which allows one to create one’s own Facebook application for your blog. That means that you can have yet another delivery — let’s call it publishing — route to reach readers. Many writers already have blogs for their fans. This new facility can expand your reach.
The facility that makes this so easily possible is BlogFuse. The whole process is described by Freelance Folder; it’s really easy. After a trial period, if you like the facility, it costs $5.00 a month to keep the application up and running. Learn about it HERE.

What fascinating-sounding programs to check out! I love the idea of being able to effortlessly move between online and offline work. For those of us who work at home, this stuff is exciting news. Having just done my taxes, it also reminds me to keep careful records of any programs I try or services I sign up for–great deductions!
