We rely on the internet so much these days, and it's (relatively) so cheap, that I just don't understand why hotels can get away with the extortionate prices they charge.

Last weekend, I took my final trip to the Kroller Muller museum. Dumbfunk and keksofant came along with us. We ate pancakes, rode on the free white bikes you can pick up at the gates to the Hoge Veluw[…]

Amy, I have to spend time in Europe this summer -- lecture to give in England, plus 2-3 weeks of research. I'm terrified of what it will cost me there. Everything will be 50 percent higher than during my last trip there 5 years ago -- and even then I found it expensive.

The prices were ridiculously high last I was there, and that was in 2004. I can only imagine how steep they are now.

Unfortunately, as a traveller, I didn't have time to find wi-fi until my last day in the Bay area. I was absolutely amazed at the steep hotel online costs.

I've found internet cafes in San Francisco to be more affordable than the hotel day rates. Of course, this was a few years ago, before wi-fi got popular. Kind of makes me happy I'm not so much of a "rover" these days.
