The Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary
Like most writers, I love dictionaries. Recently I bought two English-Spanish dictionaries that I particularly like. They both feature well-executed drawings illustrating words, and often a complex of words, about some item of importance — like the various parts of a stove. I can literally spend hours rummaging through these handsome books.
I’ve just discovered that there’s a similarly well-illustrated dictionary online, shared with us by the kind folks at Merriam-Webster. My visit there brings back memories of my mother, a frustrated writer who gave up her career to raise a family. So many times she sent me to “consult Mr. Webster,” whenever a question about words and spelling came up. And I still treasure my “Mr. Webster,” which I received as a birthday present when I turned 12, fifty-seven years ago. Thanks, Mom, for your love of words, one of your best gifts to me.
