I’m glad I got up early today to review my inbox. I discovered there two organizational tools that you may wish to investigate. Better still, if you act today, you can get one of them for free and the other at a substantial discount.
I’ve never heard of Watership Planner before. At first look, it’s one of the most innovative task management programs I’ve ever encountered. It helps to organized tasks/to-do’s that can be accomplished within a day, targets or larger elements within a project, and Goals or major projects. Of course, many such programs do that.
What is different here is it’s method of scheduling. In my present task management programs, I find myself continually manually rolling over tasks from one day to another. Watership Planner does that automatically and astonishingly assigns them time on your daily calendar. It also organizes tasks in an innovative way. Identify some tasks to accomplish between 7-9 a.m., for example — checking email, writing a blog post and the like. Designate grocery shopping to generally occur after 7 p.m., then add specific items to pick up. Go to the gym every Friday. The program, with this information, suggests a scehdule for the day, which is continuously revised as interruptions interfere with your plans. The program’s homepage has excellent demo videos, which clarifies how this works. You really have to view it to appreciate just what this program does. There’s a lot more to it than I have mentioned here. The program’s help file, interestingly, repeatedly shows examples relevant to writers.
I know, it all sounds much too automated. But I am extremely intrigued by it. I’m giving it a quick test run.
Today only, the software is available from Bits du Jour for $49.95, discounted from the usual price of $89.95. Yes, that’s still expensive, but the user’s license allows some intriguing flexibility:
- You can use the program for free to handle up to 36 tasks. If you have more tasks than this, you need to purchase the license.
- You can install the program on multiple computers, as long as the program is not used simultaneously. That means installations on both desktop and laptop are permitted at no additional cost.
THE OTHER DEAL is at Giveaway of the Day: Folder Marker Home 3.0. This program allows users to color code the folders in their computer file management program and on their desktops. There’s a free version at the program homepage, but it is more cumbersome to use. The Home version makes the process very easy. If your computer is packed with data, you may find this program useful. Again, look at the home to understand more fully how this program works. Hint: read the comments at the bottom of the Giveaway of the Day discount page — you’ll find useful links to other features, reviews and free icons. REMEMBER: This program is offered FREE on today only.

I spent several frustrating hours with Watership Planner. I like what the program is trying to do, but I simply could not get it to work properly.
I tried to build a hierarchical tree of a big project, creating a nest of folders and tasks. For some reason, I was never able to reorder the sequence of folders. When I went to the Help to see instructions, it present screens that I was never able to find.
At one point, thbee program froze and crashed my laptop.
This program is sadly not yet ready. Maybe someday? The concept is good, the execution dismal.

The task manager program sounds like having a personal secretary! I am a little leery of trying it, though, after reading the above comment…

Kristi, good to hear from you again. The developer of Watership Planner has already gotten in touch with me — he’s very alert, following his one-day discount. Looks like he and I will engage in a long and detailed correspondence. He’s open to feedback; I’m eager to see the program work. I’ll post follow up info here from time to time.

I just went back to the Watership Planner website, nine months after my original visit and post. I was saddened to see that the site still offers the same version which was avaialbe in June 2008. Apparently, this project is seriously stalled. That's a pity, as I had a rather long and detailed correspondence with the developer. He seemed so hopeful for his product, yet also discouraged by the suggestions I offered to reorganize the software's interface.
