Over 1000 entries have been submitted to Dorito’s remarkable contest to select its consumer-created TV for the SuperBowl broadcast. With considerable patience [the video loads slowly into your computer], you can view these entries online, though voting for your favorite closed on January 19. The winner will be broadcast as the second ad following the SuperBowl kickoff, after the traditional opening ad by Budweiser.
As one works through these entries, the writer in us must wonder: could I produce such an ad to promote my book? At YouTube, we would not be limited to the strict 30-second format?
I learned while visiting the contest site about Jumpcut, an online video editing facility which apparently was utilized by many of the Dorito’s entries. And, of course, there are many video-editing software programs available as well. With a camera and computer, creating promotional spots is certainly within our reach.
ONE CAUTION: As a former audio-visual producer, I encourage anyone exploring a YouTube spot to pay particular attention to the quality of SOUND in the piece. This aspect is often overlooked, leading to less-effective pieces.
I’ll try to keep my eye out for various Book Trailers and promotional videos. In fact, I may even mount an effort, with help from blog readers, to select the Top Ten Book Trailers of 2007 toward the end of the year.
