Elance promises to match projects in need of help — in the arena of writing, design, website development and business consulting — with freelancers looking for work. The online matchmaker claims that over 100,000 potential customers visit its website each week.
Writing assignments run the gamut, from sales letters, to assigned articles for a magazine, to web content to ghost-wrting books. As I write this, there are 331 writing assignments open for bidding.
Of course, there are some costs involved. Writers pay a fee, either monthly, quarterly or once a year, for “join” the team of professionals. In return, Elance promises to send the team member a specified number of potential projects that match one’s capabilities: “select” members receive notice of 120 projects a month: “professionals,” 80; and “limited,” 8. Membership fees fun from $349 annually for Select Members to $59 for Limited Members. Freelancers can test drive the service for as little as $11 a month. If a freelancer receives a contract for a project, Elance takes a commission of 6.75 to 8.75 percent.
In addtional to passing on freelance leads, Elance provides additional services, facilitating communication between customer and freelancer, as well as payment processing.
There’s lots of information at the website, which is certainly worth a visit by free-lance writers.
