Calculating Hourly Rates: A Tool For Freelancers

Many writers undertake work for an hourly fee.Â Website/blog Freelance Switch offers a “calculator” to help freelancers understand and determine their fees.

The calculator calls for a lot of facts and figures from the freelancer to plug into the calculator as it takes one through a four-step process:

What are your business expenses?
What are your personal expenses?
How many billable hours do you have?
What is your target income?

Coming shortly after tax time, these requested facts and figures may be more easily at hand than at other times of the year.Â In any case, going through the calculations is illuminating, especially for those who’ve not thought much about what considerations should be taken into account when setting fees.

This calculator may help writers understand more fully the business considerations of a free-lance writing career.
