I admit it: I enjoy listening to other writers discuss their books and even to literary agents explaining how difficult it is to be published. Often I build my week around Barbara DeMarco-Barrett’s Thursday evening podcast Writers On Writing.
Barbara’s hour-long program is broadcast over the University of California Irvine FM radio station, at 88.9 on the FM dial. Fortunately, since I don’t live anywhere near there, it is simultaneously broadcast internationally via an internet streaming audio feed — just click the LISTEN NOW link at the top right of the station website. Barbara usually lists upcoming guests on the show’s website. I’ve already set aside June 21 to listen to agent Noah Lukeman, whom I may someday approach with my own book proposal [Noah, are you listening?].
Even better, one can download programs when they are eventually posted in the podcast archives. I have over 20 shows in my Writers On Writing download folder; some of them I’ve even listened to more than once. I consider them invaluable resource material. Perhaps it is no surprise: my downloads mostly feature agents and editors [Noah, you do have competition, you know].
I also enjoy hearing writers describe just how they write, how they overcome hurdles and writer’s block, how they cope with rejection, how they promote their work.
In a word, Writers On Writing is one of my most valued resources for continuing education, and it provides me a broad avenue to the community of writers. I recommend that you visit Barbara’s website and subscribe to her email newsletter, which reminds you about upcoming programs.
Barbara DeMarco-Barrett, in case you don’t know, is the author of the highly-regarded Pen On Fire: A Busy Woman’s Guide To Igniting The Writer Within. She is also very active in the American Society of Journalists and Authors and edits its informative newsletter. She even finds time for her own chatty blog. I feel privileged to be her neighbor — via the internet.
