The No Thick Manuals blog has put together a list of “must-have” open source applications for writers. It’s an intriguing list, but most writers will frankly not follow up on it, as the program descriptions do not give any compelling reason to take a look. I’m sharing the link now, as I do know some writers of my blog with the technical penchant to play with them. And I’ll probably look into them over time and write fuller reviews of those I like. Here’s a list of the programs, which the blog briefly reviews, along with screenshots and links to homepages:
- Tiddlywiki — a free-form note-taker
- Bibus — a bibliographical database especially useful for Office Open users
- FreeMind — mind mapping
- Wikidpad — another note-taker
- Jamal — I’ve never heard of this one, and I’m intrigued — a cross-platform notetaker and PDF annotator
- WordNet — all writers should check this one out
- Writer’s Tools — Learned about this one a few days ago, and have downloaded it already. Offers useful extensions to Open Office Writer.

What a great blog. I stumbled here while searching for what bloggers had to say about Wikidpad. Will be reading more.
