Occasionally I mention online writer’s tools at our local writer’s group. Whenever I do so, I can count on an acid attack from a fellow member: “Why would anyone need such a thing,” he says, in one variant or another, “especially since you own your own computer.” I always dismiss him with a sentence or two, assuming he’s incapable of collaborating with anybody about anything anyway.
Now I have a different strategy for his next outburst. I’ve printed out a copy of today’s post at the Zoho Blog, “Web Apps and Collaboration: The Big Picture” by Raju Vegesna, and it’s in my book bag ready to give my critic when he next pops off.
Zoho, as you must know if you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, is one of the major players in developing a surprisingly broad array of online software applications. Vegesna is writing about this topic with an insider perspective.
Vegnesna reminds us of many of the different types of the new communications facilities available online: discussion forums, email, instant messenging, audio conferencing, video conferencing, among the most prominent. Then he turns his attention to the various collaborative tools, where different people can work, often simultaneously on the same document, spreadsheet, whitebooard, graphic design and so what. Then Vegesna contends that Communication and Collaboration tools will increasingly work seamlessly together, facilitating productivity. He gives some examples from within the Zoho applications: email within Zoho Writer, for example, or Zoho Chat available with a click within several of Zoho’s communication applications.
Vegesna’s post is brief and well-illustrated with a few graphics, a good read for writers wishing a broad appreciation of emerging capabilities in communication.
