I usually drop by the Writers Digest website once a week to quench my thirst between printed issues. There’s always something there that makes the effort worthwhile. This week WD editor Maria Schneider’s personal blog The Writer’s Perspective offers two case studies that should encourage the rest of us to keep on writing.
Who says you are ever too old to break into publication? In her Tuesday posting, Maria introduces us to 90-year-old Millard Kaufman, whose debut novel has just been published by McSweeney’s. Maria even gives us a link to an interview with the author posted on YouTube.
Yes, publication by a traditional publisher remains the holy grail. But, increasingly, self-publication is earning respect. Writer’s Digest has even created an annual award for the best self-published book of the year — and in her Thursday blog, Maria shares with us the name of this year’s winner. The full list of winners will be printed in the April issue of WD, a list which may create for some us a coveted goal for ourselves.
Even more useful is the link to an interview with this year’s winner, Norma Lehmeier Hartie, who provides some details about her self-publishing experience. In the interview, she passes along some very useful links to resources, as well as some of the steps she went through. Significantly, she did not do it all alone, hiring a number of professionals to help her at various stages. Anyone considering self-publishing would benefit from reading this interview.
