A Bow To Scriptwriters
Photographer Michael Downend, who also writes for screen and stage and who reads this blog regularly, recently sent me information about a remarkable resource on the internet, which leads to this post.
Dr. Richard Toscan, Dean of the School of Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, has been building a resource for scriptwriters on the internet for over 10 years now — The Playwriting Seminars: The Full-Length Play. Toscan calls his effort “An Opinionated Web Companion on the Art and Craft of Playwriting.” It is an assemblage of 230 interlinked webpages, a full-fledged and free seminar. Experienced playwrights may prefer to jump through the course from link to link. Beginning writers, however, are advised to follow a more structured route, which Toscan provides in a WHAT’S HERE GUIDE, the best starting place. I recommend that you read the reviews of this website to get a professional overview of what’s on offer. Helpful also is the course summary on the Seminar Homepage.
While speaking of Virginia Commonwealth University, Downend also pointed me to the English Department’s online literary magazine Blackbird, also worth a look.
