Not to be outdone by Bits du Jour’s discount today [see post below], Giveaway of the Day is offering a software that sync’s up folders in your network. This is useful for writers who work both on desktop and laptop computers.

If this kind of software might be useful to you, be sure to read all the comments at the bottom of the give-away page. Other GOTD subscribers point to several other freeware programs that do the same thing. Here’s a list of the software mentioned [usually with links]:

  • Sync Now!
  • Microsoft FolderShare
  • Microsoft SyncToy 2.0
  • AllwaySync
  • SyncBack

I’ve used most of these at one time or another. All are effective, though they do have some differences in the way the work. I use these programs to sync folders on my laptop and my portable hard drive, very helpful in backing up my data.

I also use a new facility still in beta development — Syncplicity. It automatically saves a sync’d copy to an online storage area [which you can access from anywhere]. From this central repository, the program then goes on to sync up multiple computers, a service that is invaluable to me as I move back and forth between two residences.A Comparison of an IBM X31 laptop with 12" screen against an IBM T43 laptop with a 14" screenImage via Wikipedia
