Successful writers, of course, do more than write.  They gather and organize ideas and information.  They build networks and, perhaps, a fan base.  TweetDeck, which builds upon Twitter, will help you do both.

Twitter, which I’ve mentioned several times lately, is a helpful too for these tasks — but by itself, it is immensely disorderly.  in fact, it is sometimes difficult to gather what you need, especially if you follow a lot of resource people.  This disorder has spawned quite a number of additional programs that seek to bring order out of a torrent of tweets.

Right at the moment, TweetDeck, especially with its upgrade just this week. is the best.  It allows one to create groups that allow one to track the people and topics of most interest.

Fortunately, the internet already have a how-to video which walks one through TweetDeck, explaining its features in very clear terms.  It was created by John Haydon at CorporateDollar.Org.  You can find it at John’s site.  OR you can view it right here within this blog:  just scroll down the sidebar and find it among the VIDEOS FOR WRITERS, where it will be available for a few more days.

Speaking of VIDEO FOR WRITERS, this is a new resource I’ve created.  As I come across online video relevant to writers, I grab it for my VIDEO FOR WRITERS collection, which is powered by Vodpod.  You’ll find there quite a number of videos already, all with my brief annotations to provide some presepective.  My blog will feature in the sidebar with most recent four videos collected, so check those out from time to time.

    Tom,

Thanks for mentioning the TweetDeck video! There's also a video for iTweet.net, which is a web-based app.

John, thanks for the lead. I do not yet know iTweet.net — I'll check it
out. There are SO MANY Twitter clients out there, and I'm still enough of a
Twitter novice that I've got lots yet to learn.

Thanks for this post. I have only been on Twitter for a short time, and it is already unwieldy and unorganized. Anything that would help that problem sounds good!

Kristi, that seems to be the normal reaction. Initial fascination, followed
up dismay at the clutter. It's only when one begins to find ways to
organize the stuff that Twitter becomes useful. One other suggestion: be
    very selective who you follow.
