Online merchants such as Amazon went all out to attract holiday buyers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The results are in: The Kindle e-Book Reader was the biggest draw of all. Indications continue to mount that e-Books will be major players as writers search for an audience. To underscore this message, two new e-Book readers, scheduled for distribution early next year, have been announced this week, both moving into new territory. For me, I’m even more exicted about what Sports Illustrated sees as its future on an e-book reader.
The eDGe
EnTourage Systems is poised to release a revolutionary device in February, the eDGe. Here’s what it says:
The enTourage eDGe™ is the world’s first dualbook, combining the functions of an e-reader, netbook, notepad, and audio/video recorder and player in one. It’s a comprehensive device that lets you read e-books, surf the Internet, take digital notes, send emails and instant messages, watch movies and listen to music anywhere, at any time. This is nothing you’ve ever seen before!
My jaw dropped when I visited the eDGe homepage. This may finally be the device I’ve been waiting for! Time will tell, of course. But I’m truly intrigued. I’d certainly pay $490 for all the functionality it promises.
JooJoo
There’s been a lot of talk about a forthcoming Apple tablet computer that will double as an e-book reader. But Fusion Garage has beat Apple to the punch with its JooJoo. This device will be launched on 11 December — you can follow the details at the JooJoo homepage. This launch comes amid some controversy, briefly described at ZDnet. What is important to writers is the capability of the tablet solution to display full color graphics, something that the Kindle, Sony and Nook cannot currently do. And it does raise interest even further in the anticipated Apple device. Read a review of the device at PMP Today. We’ve also picked up a demo video, which will be available in our sidebar for a few days — and also at VIDEO FOR WRITERS.
More Kindle News
Apparently Amazon is readying yet another Kindle configuration, this one aimed at sight-impaired readers. See the link at the bottom of this post.
Nook Notes
David Pogue, personal tech reporter for the New York Times, today writes a very cautionary piece about the Nook, suggesting that Barnes and Nobles rushed it out to the Christmas market with many “unfinished” features.
Sport Illustrated — e-Book Reader
Time Inc. has released a very speculative demo video about what Sports Illustrated will look like on a tablet e-book reader. This suggests what is yet to come. The video is available for the next few days in our sidebar Video for Writers. Or you can find it at our companion website VIDEO FOR WRITERS.
An Unrelated Tip: Online Invoicing
Some of you writers have a need to invoice clients from time to time. If you are one of them, check out Invoicera.
