Like a true geek, I followed the Apple event today via the minute-by-minute live blogging from Gizmodo.  It was complete with photos, including shots of the graphics shown on-screen to the audience.  At first, the “secret device” looked like a bigger iPod, built for the “A” crowd, hence its name ipAd, rather than the ipOd for Ordinary people. But they were just holding back the more important features until the end:

  • new, inexpensive version of  iWorks applications [$9.99 for the word processor],
  • a convenient dock and physical keyboard for those not comfortable with the touch-screen keyboard,
  • an attractive e-book reader
  • use of the open ePub format [great news for us writers]
  • an iBookstore, drawing on the catalog of several major US publishers, including Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Hachette
  • a New York Times application designed especially for the iPad [a harbinger, I'm sure, of similar apps for other publications],
  • Wi-Fi and 3-G connectivity, plus syncing with computer via cable
  • and, finally, a surprisingly reasonable price [$499 for the most basic model without 3-G!]

With the iPad, writers can now retreat to the woods and be perfectly happy — and productive.

Gizmodo is making available several short videos of the Apple live presentation.  Here’s the one which will interest writers the most.

The fact that the iPad has a word processor as an app makes all the difference to me. I'll definitely buy one to take when I travel. Usually I carry at least 5 books with me, so an iPad will solve my right-brain dilemma as to which one to choose. Combine that with internet access, a great calendar and the word processor, and it works for me!

    My thoughts exactly!

Was pleased to see that ComputerWorld has just posted an article at its website echoing the very same highlights of the iPad that I pointed out — but with more detail. http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9149862/Th...
