As regular readers know, I keep my eyes open for new resources and tricks to help writers with the Four Cornerstones of Productivity for Writers. Today’s post speaks of three of them.

ORGANIZING: RECORD YOUR SKYPE INTERVIEWS

We’ve covered this subject before. But there’s a new, free software available that almost effortlessly records Skype internet phone calls: Skype Call Recorder. Read more about it at Lifehacker. Check the comments too for some interesting back-and-forth about the legality of recording conversations, as well as other options for PC, Mac and Linux.

WRITING: USER REVIEW OF NEW NOVELIST SOFTWARE

Our reader Pace Miller has written an excellent, thorough and very honest review of the special software NewNovelist on his personal blog. Himself a lawyer with a fantasy novel that lingered in scattered notes for 9 years, Miller discovered that this software put him on track with his writing. He does say that the software is probably not that useful for experienced novelists who already have their writing routines in place. Incidentally, I learned about this software from a comment Pace posted to one of my own reviews here on this blog — leaving comments on blogs can be very productive [hint, hint].

PROMOTING: USING SLIDE SHOWS ON FACEBOOK AND LINKED IN

Inside Facebook keeps its readers up-to-date about new developments affecting the super-popular social application Facebook. In a recent post, it identifies new capabilities that can pull together three online applcations: SlideShare , Facebook and LinkedIn . I find this new capability tantalizing as a writer. One can now make a PowerPoint presentation — or use OpenOffice or even the Macintosh software Keynote — that promotes one’s book or free-lance business. Then one uploads the presentation to SlideShare — you’ll need to open an account there — which can now automatically pass the presentation on to your Facebook and LinkedIn pages. This is yet another way to distribute notice for your work.

I haven’t yet had time to test this out myself so I can’t yet write a full review, but I still wanted to pass along this information for those of you that have a product to promote right now. Take a look at the Inside Facebook review. In fact, if you are really pursuing promotion via the social media, you may wish to buy an informative e-book available at Inside Facebook: Facebook Marketing Bible: 40+ Ways to Market Your Brand, Company, Product, or Service Inside Facebook. The e-book is not inexpensive at $49, but its Table of Contents promises to give one a thorough understanding about the inner workings of Facebook. Even I, as a Facebook user for the past two years, do not have a very good understanding of all the new poosibilities Facebook offers — they are not immediately apparent. This e-book was made available for download only last February, so it’s really current.

Of course, another option for visual promotion is YouTube — or a book trailer produced in Macrosoft Movie Maker, both of which I’ve discussed before on this blog.
